Saturn (Shani) in Vedic Astrology: Discipline, Karma and Time

No planet is feared like Saturn (Shani), and none is more misunderstood. Saturn is the planet of time, discipline and karma: it delays, tests and teaches, and it rewards patient, honest work with results that last. Many of the most accomplished people have a strong Saturn.

What Saturn signifies

  • Discipline and responsibility: hard work, duty, structure and perseverance.
  • Time and delay: slow, steady progress; results that come late but stay.
  • Service and the working people: labour, the elderly, the poor and servants.
  • Endurance and detachment, and the lessons of loss.
  • Industry: manufacturing, mining, oil, land, operations and large organisations.
  • The body: bones, joints, teeth, nerves and chronic conditions.

Its day is Saturday, its direction west, its colour black or dark blue, its metal iron and its gem the blue sapphire.

Where Saturn is strong or weak

Condition Sign
Exalted Libra, deepest at 20°
Own signs Capricorn, Aquarius
Debilitated Aries, deepest at 20°

Saturn gains directional strength in the 7th house and generally does well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. Its special aspects fall on the 3rd and 10th houses from itself.

Saturn is not "bad" for everyone

For Taurus and Libra ascendants, Saturn is the yogakaraka, the most favourable planet in the chart. For Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants it is the Lagna lord. Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra forms Shasha yoga, one of the Mahapurusha yogas.

A strong Saturn

Patience, reliability, organisation, endurance, a long and steady career, authority earned over time, and a strong sense of justice.

A weak or afflicted Saturn

Delays, heavy responsibilities, loneliness or pessimism, chronic aches, and obstacles that feel unfair, until the lesson is learnt. Saturn's afflictions usually ask for effort and integrity rather than luck.

Saturn's transits and dasha

Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign and circles the zodiac in about 29.5 years. Its passage around your Moon sign is Sade Sati; its transit through other houses is covered in Saturn transit. Saturn's mahadasha lasts 19 years.

Simple remedies

  • Work hard, keep commitments and act with integrity: Saturn's own remedy.
  • Serve the elderly, the poor and labourers; feed crows and black dogs, a traditional practice.
  • Saturday Hanuman or Shani worship, a sesame-oil lamp, and the Shani mantra.
  • Look after bones, joints and teeth.
  • Blue sapphire only after careful advice; see gemstones.
