Saturn Transit (Shani Gochar): How Saturn's Movement Affects You

Saturn is the slowest of the visible planets. It spends about two and a half years in each sign and takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac. Because it stays so long, its transit (Shani gochar) shapes long chapters of life, and its change of sign is one of the most watched events in Indian astrology.

Reading it from your Moon sign

Transits are judged mainly from your Moon sign. Classically, Saturn gives its best results when it transits the 3rd, 6th and 11th signs from the Moon:

  • 3rd: courage, effort that pays, success over rivals;
  • 6th: victory over debts, illness and competition; productive work;
  • 11th: gains, income and the fruits of long effort.

The challenging positions

  • 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon: Sade Sati, seven and a half years of pressure, responsibility and maturing.
  • 4th and 8th from the Moon: Dhaiya or Kantaka Shani, two and a half years touching home and peace of mind (4th) or health and sudden change (8th).
  • 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th: mixed; effort is needed in the matters of those houses, such as children (5th), partnership (7th), fortune (9th) or career (10th).

What softens or sharpens a transit

  • Saturn's role in your chart: for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants Saturn is often favourable.
  • Your dasha: a strong mahadasha cushions a difficult transit.
  • Saturn's bindus in ashtakavarga: Saturn transiting a sign with many points is far milder.
  • Retrograde phases: for about four and a half months each year Saturn is retrograde, and matters from earlier in the transit return for completion.

Preparing for Saturn

Saturn rewards structure: plan finances conservatively, keep commitments realistic, look after bones, joints and teeth, and choose steady effort over shortcuts. Service to the elderly and the poor is Saturn's classic remedy.

Where Saturn is now
