Gemstones in Vedic Astrology: When to Wear Them and When Not To

Gemstones are the most visible remedy in Vedic astrology, and the most often misused. In the tradition a gemstone does not "fix" a planet; it strengthens it. That is helpful when the planet is good for you, and harmful when it is not.

The nine gems

Planet Primary gem Common substitute
Sun Ruby (Manik) Red garnet
Moon Pearl (Moti) Moonstone
Mars Red coral (Moonga) Carnelian
Mercury Emerald (Panna) Peridot, green tourmaline
Jupiter Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) Citrine, yellow topaz
Venus Diamond (Heera) White sapphire, zircon
Saturn Blue sapphire (Neelam) Amethyst
Rahu Hessonite (Gomed) —
Ketu Cat's eye (Lehsunia) —

The first rule: strengthen only friends

The key question is not "which planet is weak?" but "which planet is good for my ascendant?" A planet ruling kendras and trikonas from your Lagna (especially the Lagna lord, the 5th and 9th lords and the yogakaraka) is generally safe to strengthen. A planet ruling the 6th, 8th or 12th house generally is not: strengthening it can strengthen illness, conflict or loss.

For example, for a Taurus Lagna, Saturn is the yogakaraka and a blue sapphire may be suitable; for a Leo Lagna, Saturn rules the 6th and 7th and a blue sapphire is usually avoided.

Use extra care with

  • Blue sapphire and the node stones (hessonite, cat's eye): they are considered fast and strong in effect. Traditionally they are tried on a trial basis before being worn permanently.
  • Wearing gems for opposite friends at once, such as ruby with blue sapphire (Sun and Saturn).

Quality and wearing

  • Natural, untreated stones are traditionally recommended, of adequate weight (often 3 to 7 carats for coloured stones, smaller for diamonds) and set so the stone touches the skin.
  • Each gem has a traditional finger, metal, weekday and time to begin wearing, usually in the planet's hora on its weekday, with its mantra.
  • Buy from a reputable laboratory-certified source.

Safer remedies first

Mantra, charity, fasting, worship and above all changes in conduct that reflect the planet's virtues are safe for everyone and need no prescription. For Saturn: discipline and service; for Jupiter: respect for teachers; for the Moon: care of the mother and of one's own mind.

Gemstones should be recommended only after a careful reading of the whole chart. Our Learn page explains how to follow remedies correctly, and a private consultation can tell you which, if any, gem is right for you.
