If the Moon sign is how you feel, the Lagna is who you are. The ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It becomes the 1st house, and every other house is counted from it. Change the Lagna and the entire chart changes.
How it is calculated
As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon in about 24 hours, so a new sign rises roughly every two hours (faster for some signs, slower for others, and it varies with latitude). To fix the Lagna you need:
- the exact time of birth;
- the place of birth (latitude and longitude);
- the correct time zone for that date, including historical changes such as India's war time in 1942–45.
A birth time that is wrong by even 10 to 15 minutes can change the Lagna if you were born near a sign boundary, and it will almost always change the Navamsa ascendant.
What the Lagna shows
The 1st house represents the self: body and constitution, temperament, vitality, general fortune and the way you meet the world. Its sign colours your approach to life:
- Fire Lagnas (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): energetic, direct, enterprising;
- Earth Lagnas (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practical, steady, careful;
- Air Lagnas (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): thoughtful, communicative, social;
- Water Lagnas (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): sensitive, intuitive, protective.
The Lagna lord
The planet that rules the ascending sign is the Lagna lord, the most important planet in your chart. Where it sits shows where your life's energy flows; its strength shows your resilience. A Lagna lord in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th) or trikona (5th or 9th), in good dignity, is a great support to the whole chart.
Lagna and functional nature
The Lagna also decides which planets act as friends or difficulties for you. Jupiter is a natural benefic, but for some Lagnas it rules difficult houses; Saturn is a natural malefic, but for Taurus and Libra Lagnas it is the yogakaraka, the best planet in the chart. This is why two people with the same planet in the same sign can have very different results.
