The Five Mahapurusha Yogas: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha

The Pancha Mahapurusha yogas, the "five great-person combinations", form when one of the five true planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn) is in its own sign or its exaltation sign and in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Lagna. Many astrologers also accept the placement from the Moon. The Sun, Moon and nodes do not form these yogas.

The five yogas

Yoga Planet Signs Qualities
Ruchaka Mars Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn Courage, leadership, athletic or military ability, decisiveness
Bhadra Mercury Gemini, Virgo Intelligence, eloquence, skill in commerce, writing or analysis
Hamsa Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer Wisdom, righteousness, respect, teaching, good fortune
Malavya Venus Taurus, Libra, Pisces Charm, artistic taste, comforts, a happy married life
Shasha Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra Authority over many, organisation, endurance, influence in public work

Why they are powerful

Each yoga combines two of the strongest conditions in astrology: a planet in its best dignity, and in the most prominent houses. The planet's qualities become central to the person's character and life.

Conditions that weaken them

  • Combustion (too close to the Sun).
  • Close association with malefics or the nodes.
  • Weakness in the Navamsa: a planet exalted in the birth chart but debilitated in the Navamsa delivers much less.
  • The planet's functional role: a mahapurusha planet that also rules the 8th or 12th from the Lagna gives mixed results.

Timing

These yogas show most clearly in the dasha of the planet forming them. A strong Shasha yoga, for example, often peaks in Saturn's period (Saturn mahadasha).

Common questions

How common are the Mahapurusha yogas?

Fairly common in their basic form: any of five planets in own or exaltation sign in one of four houses. What makes one remarkable is strength: good Navamsa dignity, no combustion and no affliction.

Can a chart have more than one?

Yes. Two or more Mahapurusha yogas in one chart are rarer and are traditionally linked with unusual prominence, provided the planets are strong.

Do they work from the Moon?

Many astrologers accept the yoga when the planet is in a kendra from the Moon as well as from the Lagna. Placement from the Lagna is considered stronger.
