Gaja Kesari Yoga: The Elephant and the Lion

Gaja means elephant and kesari means lion. Gaja Kesari yoga, one of the best-known yogas in Vedic astrology, is said to give the strength and dignity of the elephant with the courage and leadership of the lion: wisdom, reputation, prosperity and a lasting name.

How it forms

The yoga forms when Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, that is, in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign counted from the Moon's sign. Since Jupiter is in one of these four positions roughly a third of the time, the yoga in its basic form is common. Its real value depends on its strength.

What makes it strong

  • Jupiter and the Moon in good dignity: Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer; the Moon in Taurus or Cancer, or at least not debilitated.
  • A bright Moon: a waxing Moon well away from the Sun gives far better results than a dark one.
  • Placement in a kendra from the Lagna as well, not only from the Moon.
  • Free of affliction: not combust, not with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn, and not in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna.
  • Strong in the Navamsa.

What it is said to give

Classical texts describe the native as intelligent, eloquent, respected, prosperous and able to defeat opponents, with a reputation that lasts. In modern terms it often shows good judgement, the trust of others, and the ability to teach, advise or lead.

When it gives its results

Like every yoga, Gaja Kesari gives most in the dashas of Jupiter and the Moon, and when transits activate the two planets.

Keep it in proportion

A weak Gaja Kesari, for instance a debilitated Jupiter in Capricorn with a dark Moon in the 8th house, adds little. A strong one is a genuine asset. As with raja yogas, the name of the yoga matters less than the strength of the planets that form it.

Common questions

I have Gaja Kesari yoga. Why haven't I seen big results?

The basic yoga is common; its results depend on the strength of Jupiter and the Moon and on running their dashas. A weak or afflicted yoga gives modest results.

Does Gaja Kesari form if Jupiter and the Moon are together?

Yes. The 1st house from the Moon counts as a kendra, so a Jupiter–Moon conjunction forms the yoga, provided neither is weak.

Is Gaja Kesari checked from the Lagna too?

The definition is from the Moon, but the yoga is considered much stronger when the two planets are also well placed from the Lagna.
