Jupiter's mahadasha lasts 16 years. Because Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic, its period is usually welcomed: a time of growth, learning, family blessings and support from mentors. But, as with every dasha, the details depend on your chart.
What shapes the period
- The houses Jupiter rules for your Lagna. For Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio ascendants, among others, Jupiter rules excellent houses. For Taurus, Libra, Gemini and Virgo ascendants it rules some difficult ones, and its period is more mixed.
- Jupiter's dignity: exalted in Cancer, strong in Sagittarius and Pisces, debilitated in Capricorn (check for cancellation).
- The house it occupies and the houses it aspects (5th, 7th and 9th from itself).
- Its company: Jupiter with Rahu or under heavy affliction gives less.
Common themes
- Learning: higher education, teaching, writing, advisory work.
- Family: marriage, children, family celebrations and religious functions.
- Growth: promotions, business expansion, wealth.
- Guidance: finding or becoming a mentor; interest in philosophy and dharma.
- Health: watch weight, the liver and blood sugar, Jupiter's areas of excess.
The antardashas
Jupiter–Jupiter (about 2 years 1 month), then Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars and Rahu. Jupiter–Saturn and Jupiter–Rahu can bring tests within an otherwise supportive chapter; Jupiter–Venus and Jupiter–Moon are often pleasant. See Vimshottari dasha for how sub-period lengths are calculated.
Making the most of it
- Invest in education and skills; Jupiter multiplies what is learnt in its period.
- Seek good advice and give it generously.
- Plan family events; this is traditionally a favoured time.
- Guard against over-optimism and overextension.
Remedies
