Chandra-Mangala Yoga: The Moon and Mars Combination

Chandra-Mangala yoga forms when the Moon (Chandra) and Mars (Mangala) are together in one sign, or, in many traditions, when they aspect each other from opposite signs. The classical texts link it with wealth earned through one's own effort and enterprise.

The meaning of the combination

The Moon is the mind and emotions; Mars is energy, drive and action. Together they produce a mind that wants to act: ambitious, quick to respond, resourceful and determined to earn. The classical association is with money made through trade, property, business and bold initiative, sometimes through means others would hesitate to try.

What makes it strong

  • Good dignity: the Moon in Taurus or Cancer, Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn. A Moon–Mars pair in Capricorn (Mars exalted) or in Aries or Scorpio (Mars's own signs) is powerful.
  • A bright Moon: a waxing Moon well away from the Sun.
  • Good houses: the 1st, 2nd, 9th, 10th or 11th especially support earning.
  • Benefic support, especially an aspect from Jupiter, which channels the energy wisely.

Note the tension in some signs: in Cancer, Mars is debilitated; in Scorpio, the Moon is. In those cases check for cancellation of debilitation.

The emotional side

The same combination can make feelings intense and reactions quick. People with this yoga often benefit from physical activity, which gives Mars an outlet, and from practices that calm the Moon.

When it shows

The yoga becomes active in the dashas of the Moon and Mars and when transits activate the sign where it forms.
