Wealth in Vedic astrology is not read from a single house. It comes from the cooperation of the houses that hold money (2nd), bring income (11th) and give fortune (5th and 9th), supported by a strong Lagna that can make use of opportunity.
The houses of wealth
- 2nd house: accumulated wealth, savings, family money, bank balance.
- 11th house: income, gains, profits, fulfilment of desires.
- 5th house: speculation, investments, past merit (purva punya).
- 9th house: fortune, luck, blessings.
- 10th house: earnings through career.
- 4th house: property, land and vehicles.
- 8th house: inheritance, insurance, joint money and sudden gains or losses.
Dhana yogas
Classical Dhana yogas form when the lords of the 2nd and 11th houses combine with the lords of the 1st, 5th or 9th, by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs. The more of these lords involved, and the stronger they are, the greater the yoga. A strong Jupiter, the karaka of wealth, adds to it.
Lakshmi yoga is a classical wealth yoga formed when the 9th lord is strong, in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra or trikona, and the Lagna lord is also strong. It indicates prosperity and refinement.
Earned or inherited?
- Self-made wealth: strong 3rd, 10th and 11th houses, Mars and Saturn well placed, the Lagna lord in the 10th or 11th.
- Inherited or family wealth: strong 2nd, 4th, 8th and 9th houses.
- Wealth through spouse or partnership: the 7th lord connected with the 2nd or 11th.
What reduces wealth
- The 2nd or 11th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th house without support;
- a debilitated or combust Jupiter;
- malefics afflicting the 2nd house.
As always, check for cancellations and the strength of the whole chart before concluding.
Timing financial growth
Wealth grows in the dashas of the 2nd, 11th, 5th and 9th lords and of planets placed in those houses, and when Jupiter transits the 2nd, 5th, 9th or 11th from the Moon.
