Jupiter Transit (Guru Gochar): How It Affects You

Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac, spending roughly a year in each sign. Its change of sign (Guru gochar or Guru peyarchi) is one of the most watched events in the Indian astrological calendar, because Jupiter's transit shows where growth, opportunity and protection arrive in the year ahead.

Favourable positions from the Moon

Transits are read mainly from your Moon sign. Classically, Jupiter gives good results when it transits the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the Moon:

  • 2nd: income, family events, savings;
  • 5th: children, study, creativity, romance;
  • 7th: marriage and partnerships (a classic marriage trigger);
  • 9th: fortune, teachers, pilgrimage, higher study;
  • 11th: gains, promotions, fulfilment of wishes.

Positions such as the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th are considered mixed or challenging, though "challenging" for Jupiter usually means slower, not harmful.

Vedha: obstruction

The tradition also lists vedha points: a favourable Jupiter transit can be blocked when another planet transits a specific corresponding sign at the same time (with some traditional exceptions). It is one reason two people with the same Moon sign can have different years.

Jupiter's aspects

Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from wherever it transits. Its aspect on your Lagna, Moon, 7th house or 10th house can bring support even when its position itself is not ideal.

Retrograde Jupiter

For about four months each year Jupiter is retrograde. If it moves back into the previous sign, matters from the previous year return for completion before the new phase fully begins.

Read it with your dasha

A transit can only deliver what the chart promises and the dasha allows. A favourable Jupiter transit during a strong period of a planet linked to the same house is the classic signature of an event. Ashtakavarga sharpens this further: Jupiter transiting a sign with many bindus in its ashtakavarga gives its best.

Common questions

How long does Jupiter stay in one sign?

About a year on average, sometimes a little more or less because of its retrograde phases. It completes the zodiac in about twelve years.

Is Jupiter transiting my Moon sign good or bad?

Classically it is considered mixed: a year of change, new responsibilities and self-focus rather than easy gains. Your dasha and Jupiter's ashtakavarga points decide how it feels.

Which transit matters more, Jupiter or Saturn?

Both. Saturn's slower transit shows where effort and responsibility concentrate; Jupiter's shows where growth and support arrive. Events are most likely when both point to the same house.
