Rahu Mahadasha: Eighteen Years of Ambition and Change

Rahu's mahadasha lasts 18 years. It has a reputation for drama: sudden rises and falls, foreign connections, unconventional opportunities and restlessness. All of that can happen, but the period's results depend heavily on where Rahu sits in your chart.

How Rahu gives results

Rahu has no sign of its own. It behaves like:

  • the lord of the sign it occupies (its dispositor);
  • the planets it is joined with;
  • the house it occupies, which becomes the focus of the period;
  • the nakshatra lord of its position.

So Rahu in a well-placed Jupiter's sign in the 10th house can give an outstanding career rise, while Rahu in the 8th with an afflicted dispositor can bring upheavals that need care.

Common themes

  • Ambition and hunger for more: status, money, recognition, experience.
  • The foreign and unconventional: travel, overseas work, foreign companies, technology, media, new industries.
  • Sudden events: unexpected opportunities and unexpected setbacks.
  • Restlessness and, at times, confusion, anxiety or overreach.

The antardashas

The period begins with Rahu–Rahu (about 2 years 8 months), then runs through Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon and Mars. Rahu–Jupiter is often constructive; Rahu–Saturn and Rahu–Ketu ask for patience; Rahu–Venus can bring comforts and relationships. As always, it depends on the chart; see Vimshottari dasha for how sub-periods work.

Making the most of it

  • Aim high, but verify. Rahu brings opportunities; check them carefully before committing money or reputation.
  • Avoid shortcuts and anything that depends on concealment. What Rahu gives through deception it tends to take back.
  • Use its appetite for learning: technology, languages, research and new fields suit Rahu.
  • Look after the mind: sleep, routine and avoiding intoxicants matter more in this period.

Remedies

Durga worship, the Rahu mantra, and charity to outsiders, the sick and the marginalised. Hessonite (gomed) is strong and should be worn only on careful advice; see gemstones.
