Vedic vs Western Astrology: Why Your Sign May Be Different

If you know your "star sign" from a magazine and then see your Vedic chart, there is a good chance the signs do not match. You are not imagining it, and neither system has made a mistake. They measure the zodiac from different starting points.

Two zodiacs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. It starts 0° Aries at the spring equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator in March. The signs are tied to the seasons.

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac. It ties the signs to the fixed stars, the actual constellations in the sky.

Because the Earth's axis slowly wobbles (the precession of the equinoxes), the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. The two zodiacs coincided roughly 1,700 years ago; today they are about 24° apart. This gap is called the ayanamsa.

So a planet at 10° Taurus in a Western chart sits at about 16° Aries in a Vedic chart. For most people the Sun, and often several planets, move back one sign.

The Moon, not the Sun

Western astrology popularised the Sun sign. Vedic astrology gives more weight to the ascendant (Lagna) and the Moon sign (Rashi). Daily horoscopes in India are read from the Moon sign, which is why our daily horoscope asks for your Rashi, not your Sun sign.

What else is distinctive

  • Nakshatras. The 27 lunar mansions give far finer detail than the 12 signs.
  • Dashas. The Vimshottari dasha system divides life into planetary periods, which makes Vedic astrology unusually strong at timing events.
  • Divisional charts. Sixteen vargas, such as the Navamsa for marriage and the Dashamsha for career, refine every area of life.
  • Remedies. Mantra, charity, worship and, carefully, gemstones are part of the tradition.
  • The nine grahas. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are central; the outer planets are optional.

Which is "right"?

They answer slightly different questions and have different strengths. If you were raised with Vedic astrology, or want precise timing for career, marriage or education, the sidereal system is the natural choice.
