Budha-Aditya yoga forms when Mercury (Budha) and the Sun (Aditya) occupy the same sign. It is associated with intelligence, eloquence, good judgement and recognition for one's skills.
Why it is so common
Mercury never travels more than about 28° from the Sun, so the two share a sign in a large share of all charts. That makes the basic yoga common, and its value depends entirely on the conditions below.
What makes it strong
- Mercury not deeply combust. When Mercury is within a few degrees of the Sun it is combust and its independence is reduced. The yoga is considered strongest when Mercury is well separated from the Sun, roughly more than 10–14° away, while still in the same sign.
- A good sign. The yoga in Virgo or Gemini (Mercury's signs), or Leo or Aries (the Sun's), is strong. In Pisces, Mercury's debilitation sign, or Libra, the Sun's, it is weaker unless rescued.
- A good house. In a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) or trikona (5th, 9th), and especially the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th, it shows clearly in life. In the 6th, 8th or 12th it works more quietly.
- Benefic support: an aspect from Jupiter adds wisdom; heavy affliction from Saturn, Rahu or Ketu reduces it.
What it is said to give
- A sharp, practical intellect and good memory.
- Clear, persuasive communication; skill in writing, teaching or speaking.
- Aptitude for administration, accounting, analysis, commerce and technology.
- Recognition from authority figures for one's competence.
When it shows
It is most active in the dashas of the Sun and Mercury, and when transits activate the sign where it forms.
Keep it in proportion
Because so many people have it, the name alone means little. A strong Budha-Aditya yoga is a real asset for study and career; a weak one adds only a little colour. Our full reading grades the yogas in your chart; start with your free birth chart.
